Does Crying Help Your Eyelashes Grow: Myth or Reality?

As long as there’s a fascination for all things beauty, there will be myths to debunk about them. People always want to believe that looking good is easier than it needs to be. While that’s true for some who’ve won the genetic lottery, there will still be some of us who want to explore ways to improve on what already looks good or those who feel like they simply just need a little more help. And there shouldn’t be any shame in that - It is what it is. Not everyone’s the same!

One myth (or truth?) we’d like to go over is if crying does make your lashes longer. It seems like a weird one, doesn’t it? But we’ve heard so many people say this so we decided to take a deep dive about it. Here’s what we learned.

What’s The Reasoning Behind Tears, Crying, and Lash Growth?

Surprisingly, Your “Tears” Are Good For You!

tears for eyes

Crying is good for you physically and emotionally. We’re not professionally qualified at all to help you with the latter, but we can sure try!

The act of crying itself is said to help your skin look better. Stress affects your skin situation, we all know that. Keeping things bottled up inside is never a good thing. That’s why the release of emotions through crying can make you feel better and, therefore, look it.

Your tears also help clear dust and dirt from your eyes. That’s why the immediate response to irritants in your eyes is tears. Here’s a fun little science-y fact: whenever you blink, you get this thin tear film that spreads across your cornea, acting as somewhat of a shield. So more tears surely mean healthy eyes, right? Not quite.

There isn’t enough research done to see if your actual tears are good for you. So we don’t recommend placing a cup under your eyes and just weeping away to gather some tears to drink! Don’t do that!

We even took some time to maybe consider that through crying, your natural lashes may be “urged” to grow more since it feels the need to protect your eyes. The correlation would possibly be that tearing up is a response to irritants. But, alas, no studies definitively prove this.

Do tears make your eyelashes grow? As you can see, those we mentioned are some reasons why people are convinced tears can help with lash growth. We kind of get it, but those just aren’t convincing enough.

So Does Crying Help Your Eyelashes Grow?

As hopeful as we are for it to be true, it just isn’t. Crying or tears just aren’t going to make your eyelashes grow. There may be some ways you can help your lashes grow, but this isn’t it.

So one final time for the people in the back. Is crying good for your eyelash growth? No!

Ways You Can Help Your Lashes Grow

We can’t leave without offering some tips on making your lashes grow… And they’re not as intense as trying to make yourself cry. After all, that’s why you’ve come here!

Check Your Diet

Plucked your lashes off recently and feel like they aren’t growing back? One of the potential causes for this is a lack of a healthy diet. Nutrition plays a huge role in keeping your body healthy and strong. Your lashes, small as they may seem, do benefit from a balanced diet - more than you think!

Lash Hygiene

Your natural lashes deserve to be pampered and cleaned as regularly as you wash your face (which we hope you do every day). Don’t just go in there and clean your lashes and eyelids only when you’ve taken off your falsies or only when you’ve applied makeup. Even on makeup-less days, you’ve got to have a good hygiene routine.

Natural Oils

Natural oils like castor or coconut oil may help your lashes grow lush and healthy. To finish off your nightly routine, simply apply a small amount on your eyelids and remember to wash it off the next day. This is said to hydrate your lashes and prevent breakage. Do remember that this isn’t a 100% surefire way to get your lashes to grow, but at the very least you can help keep the ones you already have healthy.

Destress

We know this is easier said than done. Do try to keep your stress levels in check. We all know and heard stories of the grave effects stress can have on your body - your lashes included. You lose hair (maybe even eyelash hair), feel moody, and feel weaker…. Stress affects us all differently and it does creep up on you. Just be mindful and destress every once in a while or as often as you need.
